224 Line Partial Rebuild Transmission

Client Virginia Power Co.
Completion Date 2021
Location Virginia
Completed by MYR Energy Services, Inc. and The L.E. Myers Co.

MYR Energy and L.E. Myers wrecked and rebuilt 2.17 miles of a 230kV line that crosses the Pamunkey and Mattaponi rivers in West Point. Crews installed 18 structures, of which 12 were lattice steel structures placed in the river; a double-circuit, double-bundle conductor; and two optical ground wires (OPGW). Existing pile foundations were removed and replaced with new H-frames and pipe piles.

L.E. Myers worked closely with the client’s access contractor, Emtek, on the water crossing structures. All activities were closely monitored since two critical crossings took place in the environmentally sensitive Chesapeake Bay watershed area. Tidal changes created a challenge for crews when working on the floating matting system, for example. The MYR Energy-L.E. Myers team overcame this and other ecological issues with creative, holistic solutions that enabled the project to finish safely, and without environmental impacts.
